A New National Committee to Monitor Intangible Cultural Heritage

The National Committee for Monitoring Intangible Cultural Heritage Files was installed Tuesday in Algiers by the Minister of Culture and Arts, Malika Bendouda, the Ministry of Culture and Arts said on Tuesday in a statement.

The committee’s installation reflects “the major importance the Algerian state attaches to protecting, preserving and promoting this cultural heritage through a comprehensive strategic vision,” the statement said.
The installation of the committee comes “as part of a new approach adopted by the Ministry of Culture and Arts that balances scientific rigor in inventory and documentation with proactive monitoring and implementation,” and also “embodies the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening the national inventory of intangible cultural heritage elements and systematically managing the preparation and processing of files, both at the national level and for UNESCO registration applications, ensuring accuracy, coherence and effective performance.”
The minister underscored that “intangible cultural heritage represents a cornerstone of national identity and requires a rigorous scientific and institutional approach based on effective cross-sector coordination, moving beyond reactive measures toward a proactive and sustainable approach to management and oversight.” According to the statement, the National Committee will play a “pivotal role” in organizing the inventory process, establishing priorities, monitoring file development and standardizing documentation and update methodologies, while also proposing legal and regulatory mechanisms to shield intangible cultural heritage from extinction risks.
